The requirement was to deliver a stable, long-lifetime computing solution for roadside control cabinets and motorway gantry variable message signs (VMS), to a customer who specialises in installing traffic management systems on UK highways.

Impulse delivered a range of low power, long-lifetime extended temperature x86 single board computers which were customised to remove various I/O for security reasons. As the customer was using Network Time Protocol (NTP) there was no requirement for a lithium CMOS battery and therefore Impulse helped with a custom BIOS to support the specific LVDS display and other settings.

Once the core platform was agreed upon Impulse created a custom Windows CE6.0 image and deployed this to all systems prior to dispatch. A fixed BOM was then created with industrial storage, RAM and a custom cable harness to ease integration. Overall this provided the customer with a very stable, robust and long term solution which also saved considerable design and development costs.
