Data acquistion in the renewable energy sector
A customer in the renewable energy industry specialises in the development, build, and ongoing performance management of ground-mounted solar arrays. They are looking for a hardware solution to help them migrate from satellite communications to newer and lower cost cellular technology. As the technology deployed within their managed asset base is by its nature very diverse, a range of protocol conversion and data acquisition devices are also required to concentrate data prior to north bound communication to their cloud platform.
360 Assessment from Impulse
Impulse complete a customer site visit in order to view and fully understand the various technological and environmental demands of the system. As part of the 360 Assessment Impulse Network Engineers identify that real value could be achived from the overhaul of the montoring hardware, by reducing on-site configuration time and ongoing maintenance overheads. It is also apparent that the customer's engineers are more au fait with operational protocols, and with their new cloud monitoring software requiring knowledge of IT protocols, a template based configuration facility would be an advantage.
A modular approach
Impulse Network Engineers design a solution incorporating rugged protocol conversion devices that can be added to the base system as optional extras as and when a particular site demands their functionality. The core communication system design incorporates an intelligent IIoT gateway running a LTS Linux OS along with specialised firmware to enable a template-based approach for cloud integration. The local area network and I/O points are composed of extended temperature Ethernet Switches and Remote I/O modules, with the system being designed to be interoperable with existing site hardware.
Build
With each new project, the customer sends a system diagram and hardware list from the preselected models identified by Impulse Design Engineers. The Impulse team then pull all system components from stock and set about configuring the system based on the site requirements. A functional test is completed to reduce issues on-site, and gateway connectivity to the cloud is checked via a hardwired connection. With sites that require a cellular connection, SIM cards are installed in the gateways and provisioned with the chosen networks.
Support
In order to help the customer keep in touch with their asset base, all system components are labelled individually and the specifications stored within a QR code attached to the device. Impulse Network Engineers create technical specifications for the network which are both stored on Impulse secure servers, and provided electronically and in printed format along with the hardware. A spares provision is built into each project, with a service level agreement set up for support and replacements spanning all projects with this customer. All these elements ensure the customer receives the highest level of support and system uptime.

Services for industrial IoT

360 Assessment

Our rigorous 360 Assessment provides the basis for solutions which take full account of environmental factors, commercial imperatives and both legacy and proposed technologies.

Industrial environments are unforgiving to solutions that aren’t completely fit for purpose. That’s why we take a 360 degree approach to the question of what’s needed before providing answers. We believe in close collaboration with our customers but we’re also able to take a lead role in this crucial stage for any computing, control or communications project.
