A serial device server is a device that connects serial equipment to an Ethernet network, allowing RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 devices to communicate over IP. In practical terms, it makes serial equipment network-ready and allows software on the network to access connected serial devices without requiring a direct local serial port.

Serial device servers are commonly used with PLCs, meters, sensors, barcode readers, payment terminals, terminals, and other industrial or infrastructure devices that still rely on serial communications. They are especially useful when those devices need to be integrated into a wider Ethernet network rather than left isolated on a point-to-point serial link.

A serial device server is usually the better fit when the goal is to place the serial device on an Ethernet network so it can be accessed across a LAN or wider IP-based system, rather than only connecting it locally to one host machine.
