Zone 2 is a hazardous area in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of gas, vapour, or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation, but if it does occur, it will persist only for a short period. In the UK, this zoning approach is reflected in HSE guidance under DSEAR, and for equipment supply in the EU it sits within the ATEX framework under Directive 2014/34/EU.

ATEX Zone 2 networks most commonly use managed switches, unmanaged switches, routers, gateways, and wireless networking devices.
