A serial converter changes one serial interface into another so that devices using different serial standards can communicate properly. A common example is converting RS-232 to RS-422 or RS-485, which helps avoid compatibility problems when two devices do not share the same interface type.

A serial converter is usually the right choice when the requirement is interface conversion on the serial side, such as RS-232 to RS-422/485, rather than putting the device onto an Ethernet network. If the goal is simply to make two serial interfaces work together, a converter is often the more direct and simpler option.

RS-232 is widely used, but it has more limited distance and networking capability than RS-422 or RS-485.
