Flexible embedded vision computer for automated inspection systems

As the customer predominantly installs vision inspection systems on to existing production lines, it was important to have a method of integrating a variety of fieldbus protocols into the system using the same code base. The system also required multiple USB3.0 and GiGE vision PoE ports to connect cameras without sacrificing additional LAN ports in order to connect the system to the OT and IT networks in the factory.

Additionally, a small form factor was required as space is often limited, and wide operating temperatures were desirable in order to withstand the harsh conditions often associated with confined equipment cabinets on busy production lines.

During the implementation of the solution it became apparent that using a standard desktop operating system wasn’t possible, as their current operating system reached conditions in which it couldn’t continue to operate safely, resulting in unplanned and ungraceful shutdowns. 

Working closely with Advantech, Impulse created a custom Windows 10 IOT image using embedded enabling features and all the drivers required for the additional add-on cards to allow for multiple fieldbus integration. Because of our relationship with Advantech we were able to secure a fixed price for the customer, safeguarding future projects as well as being able overcome the issues presented by the requirement for multiple fieldbus.

Utilising Advantech AIIS-5410P iDoor Modules with Hilscher Net-x expansion allowed for Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus and EtherCAT without our customer having to change their software for each installation. Impulse also fully set up and tested all system components in our workshop prior to delivery, reducing the overall time and energy involved in deploying the solution on site.
