Are you ready for IEC 62368-1?
  • The IEC 62368-1 standard was introduced on 20th December 2020
  • It simplifies how ICT and AV products are certified
  • Impulse can provide more information and help with your transition
As of 20th December 2020, EN 60950-1 and EN 60065, the established safety standards for ICT and AV equipment respectively, were phased out and superseded by a single standard, IEC 62368-1.
What may seem on the surface has being a simple merger and name change, the new EN 62368-1 standard is set to fundamentally alter the way in which certification is achieved for products normally falling under the EN 60950-1 and EN 60065 umbrella.

Not only does the IEC 62368-1 standard apply to the end product, but also to the components contained within the systems. This may appear daunting, but the IEC 62368-1 standard is designed to simplify the processes involved in certification, making it a much smoother road to certify products to meet safety standards in the EU.

Why introduce the IEC 62368-1 standard?

With the continued and exponential development of technologies, the distinction between ICT and AV equipment is becoming increasingly muddied. From smart homes to the simplest of multimedia systems, many established and emerging multimedia products incorporate both ICT and AV equipment, so the move to provide a more relevant framework to certify such products has been developed in the IEC 62368-1 standard.

Furthermore, the IEC 62368-1 standard aims to simplify the method in which product designers reach certification, and provide flexibility cost savings to the product design and evaluation process by reducing the number of revisions required, in comparison to the previous EN 60950-1 and EN 60065 standards.
