The 7161 PCI serial interface provides sixteen RS-232 serial ports capable of data rates to 460.8K bps. Each RS-232 port implements all modem control signals for maximum compatibility with a wide range of peripherals. The board is Universal Bus (3.3V and 5V) compatible and utilizes 16C854 UARTs to provide 128-byte Tx/Rx FIFOs for maximum reliability in data intensive applications. The board ships with two 36" cables that terminate to sixteen DB25M connectors. Ordering options allow the choice of UARTs for custom baud rates and 9-bit protocols.

Our customer was looking for ways to improve efficiency and reliability, and reduce operation costs and overheads for their manufacturing facility. The initial step in this transformation was to add additional monitoring and measurements to several areas of their facility to allow the collection of usage data from older machinery for analysis. The machinery to be analysed would be located in many areas of the complex, with some sitting in concrete outbuildings far from the source of the main network.
