Serial communication is a method of transmitting data one bit at a time between devices over a communications link. In industrial applications, it is commonly used for connecting equipment such as controllers, meters, sensors, terminals, legacy systems, and other devices that rely on interfaces such as RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485.

Serial communication is still widely used because many industrial systems and field devices continue to depend on proven serial interfaces for control, monitoring, and data exchange. In many applications, serial devices remain reliable, well established, and deeply integrated into existing systems, making continued support important for upgrades, expansion, and long-term operation.

A serial communication range includes serial device servers, serial converters, line drivers and repeaters, surge protectors, radio adaptors, and serial cards or adaptors. Each serves a different role, from connecting serial devices to Ethernet networks through to converting interfaces, extending signal distance, or protecting communications lines.

The right choice depends on the interface being used, the type of connected equipment, the communication distance, the installation environment, and how the serial connection needs to function within the wider system.
