A Compact Industrial PC Built Around Intel Core Ultra Series 2

AAEON’s BOXER-6648-ARS Series brings Intel Core Ultra Processors Series 2 into its fanless BOXER range. It provides a higher-performance embedded platform for machine-level computing, inspection systems, automation upgrades and industrial edge workloads.

The processor is the obvious headline, but the wider specification is the more useful part of the story. The value is in the full system design: wide-voltage power, industrial I/O, mounting options and operating characteristics that suit cabinets, machines and production environments.

The series is available with Intel Core Ultra 9, Core Ultra 7 and Core Ultra 5 processor options, including 285/285T, 265/265T and 225/225T variants. Depending on the selected CPU, the platform offers up to 24 cores and up to 36 TOPS of AI inferencing performance across the CPU, GPU and NPU.

That gives the system more room for applications that are starting to outgrow basic control or data logging hardware. Vision inspection, local analytics, sensor processing, protocol handling and production monitoring all place different demands on an edge computer. Some workloads need CPU performance, while others rely more heavily on graphics or benefit from dedicated AI acceleration. The BOXER-6648-ARS provides a compact way to handle more of that processing at the machine.

Connectivity That Suits Real Installations

Industrial PCs are rarely chosen on compute performance alone. Once the system is installed, the surrounding interfaces often decide how useful it is.

The BOXER-6648-ARS includes three LAN ports: two 2.5GbE ports using Intel I226-LM and one 1GbE port using Intel I219-LM. This helps separate camera traffic, machine communication, service access and wider plant network connectivity.

The two 2.5GbE ports suit higher-bandwidth devices such as industrial cameras, inspection systems and data-heavy sensors. The additional 1GbE port gives the system another network path for supervisory systems, maintenance access or plant-level communication.

The six DB-9 serial ports are just as useful. Many factories still rely on serial devices that continue to perform a necessary role, even as new computing layers are added around them. The six DB-9 serial ports support RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485, allowing the BOXER-6648-ARS to connect to PLCs, instruments, controllers, barcode readers, weigh scales and other established equipment without a separate serial expansion plan from day one.

There is also an 8-bit DIO terminal block, dual HDMI 2.0 display output, audio I/O and remote power control. USB provision depends on the selected model: the H810-based version includes four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and four USB 2.0 ports, while the Q870-based version provides six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and two USB 2.0 ports.

This I/O mix is one of the product’s main strengths. It can support newer high-bandwidth peripherals and older field devices in the same compact system, which is often exactly what industrial upgrade projects require.

H810 and Q870 Options

The BOXER-6648-ARS Series is available in two chipset configurations: an H810-based A1 SKU and a Q870-based A2 SKU.

The H810 version gives a strong base specification for embedded computing, machine control, data acquisition and local processing. It carries the main strengths of the product family: Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processing, DDR5 memory, triple LAN, serial connectivity, DIO, wide-voltage DC input and fanless construction.

The Q870 version adds RAID support, six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and support for Intel Active Management Technology on the two 2.5GbE LAN ports. That makes the Q870 version the better choice for projects with greater remote diagnostics, maintenance or fleet management requirements.

Remote management becomes more valuable once systems are installed in production lines, transport infrastructure, monitoring stations or distributed automation sites. Easier diagnostics and maintenance reduce the need for physical access to the cabinet, especially once systems are deployed across multiple locations.

Memory, Storage and Expansion for Heavier Edge Applications

The BOXER-6648-ARS supports up to 96GB of DDR5 memory across two SODIMM slots. For an embedded Box PC, that is a useful amount of headroom for edge applications running multiple tasks at once, particularly when the system is running a mix of machine communication, data capture, vision software, database services or local analytics.

Storage is split across one M.2 2280 M-Key slot with PCIe Gen 4 x4 support and two internal 2.5-inch SATA drive bays. A fast NVMe drive can be used for the operating system and application workload, with the SATA bays available for data logging, image capture, production records or redundancy.

That storage flexibility is useful when the computer is doing more than passing data upstream. Inspection images, event logs, machine data and local records often need to remain close to the process, especially when network bandwidth, latency or data retention requirements make constant transfer impractical.

An M.2 2230 E-Key slot is included for wireless expansion. This is useful for mobile assets, retrofit projects and installations that cannot rely entirely on wired network infrastructure.

Built for Industrial Installation

The BOXER-6648-ARS has a fanless chassis measuring 264mm x 81mm x 156mm. It is compact enough for cabinet and machine installation, while still providing a dense collection of ports across the front and rear panels.

The system is rated for operation from -25°C to 50°C when configured with a 65W TDP CPU, with 0.7 m/s airflow. Much like any fanless computer, the installation needs to be planned properly. Cabinet temperature, mounting position, airflow, surrounding equipment and sustained processor load will all influence long-term performance.

Power input is via a 10V to 35V DC terminal block. Circuit protection includes over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage and short-circuit protection, which is useful in installations where supply conditions may be less predictable.

Wall mounting is included, with DIN-rail available as an option. That gives the system flexibility across machine builds, control panels and retrofit work.

Security and Operating System Support

The BOXER-6648-ARS includes TPM 2.0 and supports features such as UEFI Secure Boot, secure boot key, Security Flash and Rollback Protection.

These features are relevant for connected industrial systems, particularly when the edge computer sits between operational equipment and a wider IT, cloud or supervisory environment. They help protect the software stack and give teams more control over what can run on the device.

Operating system support includes Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 and Ubuntu 24.04 or later. For many industrial users, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 will be the most relevant option, especially for dedicated-use systems that need a stable operating system platform and a longer lifecycle.

Where the BOXER-6648-ARS Series Fits

The BOXER-6648-ARS Series suits applications that need more processing headroom than a basic gateway or compact controller, but still need the installation advantages of a fanless industrial Box PC.

Typical uses include machine vision, automated inspection, production data capture, industrial monitoring, edge AI, virtualisation, equipment upgrades and control systems with a mixture of modern and legacy devices. The triple LAN, six serial ports and DIO make it practical around existing machinery. The Intel Core Ultra Series 2 platform gives it the performance needed for more demanding local workloads.

That balance of processing performance, industrial connectivity and deployment practicality is also why the BOXER-6648-ARS features in our guide to the 5 best industrial PCs for 2026, which compares current platforms for customers reviewing new industrial computing hardware.

For upgrade projects, the product can replace older industrial computers while keeping support for serial devices, panel-friendly mounting and wide-voltage DC power. For new systems, it offers a compact route into higher-performance edge computing without losing the industrial details that often decide how smoothly a system can be deployed.
